My very favorite literary theme.

Devastation!
I just picked up a few books as a gift for someone, and was giving him my little summations of each one as I pulled them from the bag... 'This one is just devastating... so is this one... oh this one isn't so bad, it's a love story..." and as I say that last little bit he scans the back and at the point of his long finger... lo and behold... promised devastation. Alright fine. Maybe that one is devastating too. Today at home, I pick up the new novel I bought myself (although I'm in the middle of a few others, just the way I do things) and I break my usual self-prescribed ban on back cover reading and see, "a devastating new novel." You would think it would end there, but now I'm getting a little freaked out, so I pick up the other book that I started a few days earlier and examine the jacket... no devastation so far... and then at the end of the paragraph... "in the face of total devastation." Well, I guess we now know why I'm so much damn fun at parties!

At what point to you even suspect that won't have something devistating in it. Art and literature immitate life, and lets face it, life can be pretty damn devistating sometimes
